In August 1784, a convention at Jonesboro voted to seek recognition as a state for the east Tennessee area, which it named in honor of Benjamin Franklin. Congress rejected the proposal on 24 August. Despite opposition from N.C., which had title to the area, efforts to establish Franklin continued until 1790, when the US placed the area under the Southwest Territory's jurisdiction.
