Under the pressure of taxes The Parliament is planning to raise the taxes for iron ore producers. The authors of the bill have tried to table the document for Rada’s consideration a couple of times already. However, they have failed to consider it. Meanwhile, thousands of people working at the ore mining and enrichment plants fear the future. Vsevolod Prokofev has found out if they have the future. This is Inhulets, one of the housing estates in the city of Kryvyi Rih in Dnipropetrovsk region. It takes 30 minutes to get here. A total of 60,000 people live here and everything here depends on the OMEP. The Segodnya is met by Nadiya Kovalenko on the central alley. She came here from Ural to build the enterprise in the middle of nowhere in the 1960s. So, she has spent all her life here. This is my history, these are my hopes, this is the stability of my family, my children.
All in all it feeds us. The housing estate grew along with the enterprise. In recent years, Nadiya says, the district has started new stage of its development. They started to create recreation zone for the people. They started to acquire medical equipment for our hospitals within the framework of certain aid. There was corporate assistance to educational establishments. They paid considerable attention to the youth, the OMEP invested heavily in it. This bridge leads to the central school 1 and the kids come here to school across the Inhulets River. Besides, the children also go to the central stadium Kolos to do exercises. A total of 1,200 employees live not far from the Inhulets in Shyroke. Town Mayor, Oleksandr Kokul, says that the recently broken bridge was repaired by the enterprise. Besides, it has repaired the façade of the culture center building and gymnasiums in the local school. In 2018, it invested about UAH 7 million in the said facilities. This year, it has invested around UAH 8 million in our town of Shyroke.
The OMEP helps us a lot. At the same time, it’s not a duty of the enterprise, the employer takes care of it all at its own discretion. It is socially responsible. However, the ability of the enterprise to further support the people is in question, as the Government might approve new taxes for the sector. Enterprises producing iron ore will have to pay the state much more. As a result, almost 10,000 employees might be made redundant. Their families will have nothing to live for.
I don’t know why this law is being passed. It will totally ruin the metallurgical sector and I don’t know what we will do. What will we and our families do? Employees of other local enterprises might be made redundant as well. Those, who work on demand of the OMEP. We have been cooperating with the Inhulets OMEP since long ago. For our shop it has been the major client.
If the OMEP stops, our employees lose the job. We won’t be able to provide them with any other work. The people will not find other jobs in this region. It is still unknown when the Parliament will vote for bill 1210. They have planned to consider it several times already, but suspended the consideration every time. Vsevolod Prokofev, Denys Karpenko.
