04 – Composition Basics – Acrylic Painting Course

October 14, 2019

welcome everyone I bring in Schaffer and this is another video in my acrylic painting course here on YouTube and in this video i’m gonna demonstrate to you a few things about composition and let’s see how it goes okay so i’m going to draw here hopefully you can see it well enough it’s not i’ll raise it up and show it to you from time to time i’m just going to show you a few things about composition and say this is my painting this square is my painting now the way composition works is one thing you want to know is the rule of thirds and really what that is if you divide the canvas into thirds vertically and horizontally so I got my canvas into thirds and at these spots right here where the thirds meet these are what you call sweet spots and this is where you kind of want your interest to be you want your focus to be in one of these thirds generally or in the area if you look at a lot of older paintings old portraits you’ll notice that the eye level is right at this third is always right here sometimes the portraits are centered but they still use this rule of thirds on this line and if you look at a lot of photography the interest is always off to one side on one of the thirds generally and that’s a really good rule to learn the rule of thirds now for more complex compositions say you have the painting like this and the rule of thirds here so those are about where the sweet spots would be sometimes you would want your you want your interest to be here and here it’s called like a diagonal composition so you want you know the interest the I flow to be have one point of interest here and one down here so you have this diagonal composition it just makes for a really good eye flow so just look through a bunch of paintings and try to find some compositions like this a lot of the old paintings they’ll have like a person here so you have a person standing and then they’ll be a person in the lower corner whether it’s like a child or something and they’ll be looking up they’ll be looking at each other so it’s a really good composition and it doesn’t have to be exactly on the thirds it could be down here and up here you know a little off but still this diagonal composition you can do it the other side as well you’ll see a lot of these from time to time and old paintings and another composition and let me put the page here is a like a triangular composition so you have your painting here another composition will be to have like a pyramidal kind of composition so I have a lot of things going on down here and it’ll lead up to your I flow will go up to the top so that’s a really famous really well known well used composition as well I mean there’s tons of different things you can do another thing about composition is you kind of want to well I guess is kind of getting into another video but if you break it down into layers like you have that’s another thing called on hold that thought say you’re doing a landscape you either want the horizon line to be most of the time on this third you can have the horizon line and most this is the sky and this be the ground so you wanted about the third and you could also do that the other way around say you have your painting here you want the horizon line here have this be all ground and then this be the sky so there’s just a few those are just a few compositions to get your brain working you get you to understand compositions and when you start drawing thumbnails like this you know you’ll start planning out your values you know you want the darks in the front you know a tree here and then something happening over here in this diagonal you know you’ll start planning out all these things and then using all the elements that I just taught you all the principles and elements of design and painting so anyway that’s a few things on composition I don’t want to overwhelm you guys too much so anyway alright so I hope you were able to see those sketches quite nicely I tried zooming in for you anyway I hope you learned a lot with this or at least just a little bit to get you started and get you interested in composition and really just playing with things and seeing what you can create and what you can accomplish when painting and drawing and sketching all of these things so anyway I thank you for watching this video I have a lot more videos to come so like and subscribe if you wish to see more I’d appreciate it and don’t get discouraged keep on painting take care of yourself peace

  1. Another form of composing a painting that was used by the Old Masters is called the Golden section. It is best described as taking a rectangle and making a square and where that square ends is another rectangle, forming the whole rectangle. On that line is a good place to put your focal point. This can be done again and again with the remaining inner rectangle which in turn creates a spiral pattern like that of a snail's shell. I can't completely explain it, but is something worth looking into.

  2. Brandon, again, you offer great awesome wisdom 😉 I appreciate the examples that you gave, too. Very cool!

  3. Thanks so much Brandon…. things are beginning to make sense to me really appreciate all the information thanks for sharing.
    Light and Blessings
