Bernie Sanders on FDR | Bernie Sanders

A few hours ago, a few hours ago I had the wonderful opportunity to visit the Franklin Delano Roosevelt homestead. And I was happy to be there because in my view, FDR was one of the great presidents in the history of this country. He was a great president because he came into office in 1933, in a nation which was experiencing the worst depression in the history of our country and he looked around him and he saw millions of people unemployed and hungry. He saw farmers losing their farms. He saw people struggling every single day to get the healthcare they needed or education for their kids. And he came forward and he said, you know what? We are going to transform the way government works in America. And that is what he did. Before his becoming president, before his becoming president, the general culture was, well it is too bad that people sleep out on the street or that people are hungry or that people die because they don’t have access to healthcare but it is not the government’s responsibility to do anything about that. And he said, wrong. In a democratic, civilized society we will do something about that. And he put together a number of programs which created many millions of jobs for people who needed those jobs. In 1944, in a speech which sadly has gotten very little attention, it was his State of the Union speech in 1944, President Roosevelt outlined what he called a second Bill of Rights. This is one of the most important speeches ever made by a president in my view. In that remarkable speech, this is what Roosevelt stated– and I quote– We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. Now think about it for a second because that is a very profound thought. And what he said, is if people are working at two or three jobs, if people do not have adequate access to healthcare, if people are not able to get the education that they need, if people are living in poverty, are they really free people? There have been a number of studies, I don’t know if you have seen them, that have come out recently which have shown that low-income people have a life expectancy significantly lower than wealthy people. In other words, poverty is a death sentence.

  1. Bernie won the most influential person of the year award!!!! That's Bernie and that's our future president

  2. lmao this is from the poughkeepsie rally, not syracuse. i remember him saying this and the crowd behind him is the same too

  3. boys 'n girls from America. Do you have any idea what a great chance you have to get this man elected. Please. Make it happen.

    Greetings from Europe.

  4. If we truly are land of the free and the brave we must have the courage and will to fight and loosen the chains of poverty on our people , it is in my opinion a truly oppressive force. Those who seek wealth and do so in away that keeps other in that state don't deserve to be living in a land of freedom.

  5. Just a little history lesson… FDR was such a great president – that when Republicans next took power, they passed a constitutional amendment to prevent any future presidential 3rd term. FDR won 4. Bernie recognizes where our party went off track. I believe we're getting back in line with the vision of the New Deal. It's time to pass that 2nd bill of rights.

  6. What do FDR and Sanders have in common? They both were/are social democrat. 'Nough said (not really) but he was the best president.

  7. Let's win this election!
Phonebank, Canvas, Donate, Spread the word
Together we will win if we put the work in! #Bernie2016

  8. Oh how I wish the American people get Bernie as their president. It'll be fun to watch their economy actually go down the toilet, instead of just stuck in the toilet. Hope he gets two terms for maximum flush.

I see Bernie doing better than FDR. FDR's policies merely prolonged the Great Depression by 7 years, but Bernie will take the Great Recession, turn it into a YUUGE Recession, and ultimately the Greatest Depression of All Time.

  9. I remember 2009 when Obama was elected my world history teacher claimed "some say he's the next FDR".

Me in 2016: Sorry but Bernie IS FDR reincarnated.
Not a corporate warmongerer like Obama or baggage Hillary and most certainly not idiot Trump (who can't even be compared to Reagan).

  10. A tragic blown opportunity. Bernie could have been the peoples' president but instead we got shafted with the orange shit-stain trump – enemy of the people.

  11. Communist Bernie compared himself to the only president to serve more than 2 terms. Im shocked. he talks slower because his supporters are retarded! Socialism ends in cannibalism ! Always has!

  12. FDR is a top 5 President of all-time and the Democratic Party has ran away from his legacy towards Ronald Regan (while the Republicans have blown right by them). Glad to finally have someone embrace him and build upon his legacy.

  13. This video needs to be spread out more. Give it to all your trump supporter friends or the weirdos you know online
