Discussion underway to restore voting rights

September 13, 2019

PRISON. MICHELLE: WESH 2’S KELSI THORUD
WAS AT THE MEETING. SHE HAS MORE FROM SAINT MARK
A.M.E. ORLANDO. KELSI: MOST OF THIS TOWN HALL
WAS FOCUSED ON AMENDMENT 4, THE
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PASSED
BY FLORIDA VOTERS LAST YEAR TO
RESTORE VOTING RIGHTS TO MOST
PEOPLE AFTER THEY GET OUT OF PRISON. THAT AMENDMENT IS NOW AT THE
CENTER OF A POLITICAL AND LEGAL
BATTLE, AND THE PEOPLE AT THE
TOWN HALL DID NOT SHY AWAY FROM
SHARING THEIR OPINION. IN FRONT OF A CROWD OF A FEW
DOZEN, LOCAL OFFICIALS AND
COMMUNITY LEADERS DISCUSSED THE
MOST RECENT DEVELOPMENTS OF
FLORIDA’S AMENDMENT 4.>>PROPONENTS OF AMENDMENT 4
THINK THAT AMENDMENT 4 AS IT WAS
WRITTEN WAS SELF-EXECUTED AND
DID NOT NEED ANY CLARIFICATION. THE PEOPLE THAT ARE AGAINST
AMENDMENT 4 FEEL THAT ALL TERMS
MEANS FINES, ALSO. KELSI: THE AMENDMENT, WHICH WAS
PASSED LAST NOVEMBER, HAS SINCE

LEGISLATION STANDS, WE DO HAVE
AVENUES TO TAKE CARE OF THIS. KELSI: GROUPS, INCLUDING THE
NAACP AND ACLU, HAVE SUED THE
STATE OVER THOSE ADDITIONAL
REQUIREMENTS. THAT LAWSUIT IS CURRENTLY GOING
THROUGH A FEDERAL COURT. AT THE SAME TIME, GOVERNOR RON
DESANTIS ASKED THE FLORIDA
SUPREME COURT TO TAKE UP THE
CASE. EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE GOVERNOR
ASKED FOR THE FEDERAL LAWSUIT TO
BE DELAYED UNTIL AFTER THE
SUPREME COURT RULING.>>HIS INTENTION IS THAT THE
SUPREME COURT OPINION SHOULD
COME BEFORE THE RULING ON TH
LAWSUIT, AND IT MAY BE THAT THAT
SUPREME COURT OPINION WILL
AFFECT THE LAWSUIT AND HAVE AN IMPACT ON IT THAT WAY. KELSI: THE REASON THE AMENDMENT
IS SUCH A BIG DEAL IS BECAUSE IT
HAS THE POTENTIAL TO RESTORE
VOTING RIGHTS TO MORE THAN 1.4
ONE MILLION PEOPLE IN THE STATE. AN INNOCENT — AND IN A STATE
NOTORIOUS FOR HAVING CLOSE
ELECTIONS, THE IMPLEMENTATION OF
THIS AMENDMENT COULD HAVE A HUGE
IMPACT ON TH
