E Tipu E Rea looks to lodge Treaty claim over charter school closures

February 26, 2020

The NZ Principals’ Federation is standing behind the government’s
decision to end charter schools. The development comes as a group
supporting charter schools is threatening to make a claim
to the Waitangi Tribunal. Political reporter
Eruera Rerekura has more. For this advocate
of charter schools, the Government’s actions
are not consistent with the Treaty. But the NZ Principals’
Federation says it supports the Government
closing down charter schools. The NZ Principals’ Federation says it hasn’t seen any statistics
of Maori achievement, but Graeme Osbourne says
he has the evidence. Mr Cormick says
there are already schools that cater for Maori language
and culture. But Mr Osbourne claims that
mainstream schools have long repressed Maori children. Is this another issue that’ll
be taken to the Waitangi Tribunal? Eruera Rerekura, Te Karere.
