Govt settles 86 treaty settlements during its term

November 26, 2019

In the final week of parliament, there’s a rush of treaty settlements
being pushed through. Yesterday, we brought you
Ngati Maniapoto’s $165m agreement. On Friday, Ngati Whatua and Te Whakatohea are inking deals
and today Ngati Kahu ki Whangaroa saw the passing
of their claims legislation. Political reporter Eruera Rerekura
tracks today’s milestone and analyses treaty claims
in this parliamentary term. A long, arduous journey is just about complete
for Ngati Kahu ki Whangaroa. It’s a very joyous feeling. I feel really happy to see
so many kaumatua and others from the Far North,
especially from Whangaroa, being supportive. Under the settlement package,
they receive $6 million, an apology and the return
of a 3400 HA estate. They said to me
as well as some others, that the pain can still be felt, However, what happened to the land
was not right. The land needed to come back
to the iwi under the name of Kahukuraariki. Today was Ngati Kahu ki Whangaroa,
yesterday was Ngati Maniapoto. On Friday Ngati Whatua and
Te Whakatohea will come to settle their treaty claims Over the last three years, 86 claims have been settled
by the Crown. So for iwi like Ngati Kahu
ki Whangaroa, the burden of grievance
has been shed. The focus now is the future. Eruera Rerekura, Te Karere.
