Horsehead Nebula – Distance From Earth, Location, Name Meaning, Composition, Facts – Beauty Above Us

October 23, 2019

In the constellation Orion,
to the south of the star named Alnitak, there is a nebula. It was first discovered by Scottish astronomer
Williamina Fleming in the year 1888. Due to its resemblance to a horse head, when
viewed from Earth, it was named the Horsehead Nebula. It is about 1500 Light Years from Earth. The red or pinkish glow originates from hydrogen
gas predominating behind the nebula, ionized by the nearby bright star
Sigma Orionis.
