Kuia gets moko done in remembrance of the signing of the Treaty

December 3, 2019

Pera Rangitaawa (73) received
her moko kauae today at Te Papa Tongarewa, as a special reminder
of Waitangi Day. He daughters and brother
were there to support her by massaging her feet and singing
to help ease her pain. Her moko kauae
speaks of her ancestors who signed the Treaty of Waitangi. The spirit of Waitangi Day came about when our ancestors
signed the Treaty. They etched their moko
on the document. So this is to remember them by. Pera says that
as soon as the moko was done, the pain ended as well. She’s the first of her family
to receive a moko kauae.
