Every year India celebrates 26th November as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Diwas as the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26th November 1949 and came into effect on 26th January 1950. The aim of celebrating November 26 as the Constitution Day of India is to spread awareness about the Indian Constitution and its architect, Dr B R Ambedkar. The draft of the Constitution prepared by the drafting committee under B.R. Ambedkar’s leadership was accepted on this day. The Constitution Day was also a tribute to Ambedkar. After the independence of India Dr. Ambedkar was invited by the Congress government to serve as a first law minister of the India. He was appointed as the Constitution Drafting Committee’s Chairman. He was the chief architect of the Indian constitution. The Constitution is a core legal document which lists out fundamental rights of citizens, their duties, role of the government, interaction between the government and its citizens, powers of the prime minister, president, governor and chief minister and defines how the federal structure of the country will be maintained. With nearly 400 articles or provisions. This document defines the powers of the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. The constitution we have today has gone through a very interesting journey, thus, has many exciting facts that you must know. The Constitution of India was not typeset or printed but was handwritten and calligraphed in both English and Hindi. The original copies of the Constitution of India are kept in special helium-filled cases in the Library of the Parliament of India. Indian Constitution is known as a bag of borrowings as the Indian Constitution drafters borrowed concepts and ideas from the Constitutions of UK, US, Ireland, Germany, Australia, Canada and Japan. It is the longest written constitution of any independent country in the world. The Constitution of India contains 448 articles in 25 parts, 12 schedules, 5 appendices and 98 amendments. The Indian constitution is known as one of the world’s best and flexible constitution. since it has only seen 94 amendments. It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days for the assembly to finish writing the entire constitution. When the first draft of the amendment was prepared and presented for debate, over 2000 amendments were made, before it was finalized. An Interesting fact is, the day constitution was signed, it was a raining outside the parliament, this was considered to be a good omen by the assembly members. On January 24, 1950, the 284 members of Constituent Assembly signed the constitution, which included 15 women. The Preamble of the Constitution of India states that India is a Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic. The term “Socialist” was added later in 1976 through the Constitution 42nd Amendment Act, 1976. So, these were some interesting facts about the Constitution of India.
