Parliamentary judiciary committee rejects independent counsel bill for Choi Soon-sil case

November 16, 2019

Over at the parliament,… A subcommittee of the National Assembly’s
judiciary committee is currently discussing a bipartisan bill on the introduction of an
independent counsel for the Choi Soon-sil scandal. The bill, co-signed by 209 lawmakers, failed
in committee Thursday after extensive debate during an earlier session the day before. National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun has
said that he could use the power of his position to introduce the bill for a vote. The full assembly was scheduled to convene
just a few minutes ago at 2 p.m., and the opposition bloc is hoping to see the bill
pass. If it does, an investigative team will be
formed consisting of an independent counsel and dozens of prosecutors. The investigation period will last for a maximum
of 120 days.
