Pro-Gun Vs. Anti-Gun: Is There Middle Ground?

October 18, 2019

the area that i grew up in Sometimes the gun is the only way to protect yourself you’re anti gun you don’t you don’t want nobody To have guns but then that’s gonna put my family at danger The pool to the left i’m gonna have all my pro-gun people go stand on the edge of that light and all my anti-gun people On the other side first statement is i think my views on guns could change oh, i feel like anyone’s views can change on things so i’m kind of surprised that nobody felt like it could change at all i Don’t think that i could change completely to like the other side but i would definitely be open to like looking at it from a different perspective i think that my stance is very accommodating to both sides that said i feel really solid about kind of what i’ve learned And what i think is possible so i feel really solid about that although i’m you know open to accommodating for people’s needs you know people’s wishes with their rights my name is erin clayton after the orlando shooting i realized that My community was very much a target i had to get involved to do something Sometimes i think people on the other side of the issue don’t care about me or my loved ones lives? i mean The area that i grew up in and why come from a lot of you may not be able to understand that sometimes the gun is the only way to protect yourself we all believe there should be certain rules To get in them but on my side of the earth there is no gun laws. My name is Hasani. Regardless of whatever you say there’s always gonna be guns there’s always gonna be violence in the world and I got family to protect. I don’t think y’all don’t care about me or my family you know I think we all care about you know each other and others, you know the loved ones. I don’t care about y’all, I’m trying to protect me and mine. That’s that’s my reason of saying that nobody else cares about it because i’m pretty sure y’all have the same insight, like your anti-gun you don’t you don’t want nobody to have guns but then that’s gonna put my family at danger I don’t want that. I don’t want nobody to have guns. That’s not at all what we’re saying I think that there are ways to-. That’s just how I feel. Pro-gun people a lot of times are like “Well it’s never gonna be solved” like “gun violence is never gonna end” and like. It won’t. It won’t and you’re absolutely correct but there’s a bunch of ways to decrease it i’ve been in a situation in which my life was in danger. I grew up in St. Louis so we’d go downtown where there’s a huge amount of violence. We’re at home depot and this guy’s starting to gather around my dad’s truck and i’m in it alone. i’m 14 years old. And I had to put my dad’s gun out while i’m shaking and literally just set it on my lap and to show that. It ended up potentially violent, potentially robbery, you know. I don’t think people automatically are born are like “I’m pro-gun.” like i think what you experience in your life makes you that way. My name is Sarah it wasn’t until recently that my opinion changed On how i felt about guns and then i became pro-gun in order to protect me and my future family I was never pro-gun before and then some guy broke into my place and raped me and i couldn’t run away I couldn’t do anything like I literally had to lay there and take it but i knew that if i had a gun at that point of time on my nightstand I would have defended myself. I think America has a problem with mass shootings. Yeah, i think we all should step forward for that one. Come on. It’d be ignorant to say it’s not an issue like i don’t want anyone, to die like i don’t want To see these school shootings i don’t want people to get hurt We’re all for protecting ourselves but i think like when guns Are not in the right hands then it becomes an issue. And i don’t think any of us support that at the end of the day. So you all for like stricter gun laws or no? There’s a point where it goes too far. I don’t think i need to take a five thousand question questionnaire for a psychological test, you know? but like isn’t that worth it? and like i’m not saying that that’s necessarily what we would definitely do or whatever but like a five thousand Questionnaire or like people’s lives? Would you rather? Would you be willing to go through the same process to get an automobile training, licensing, (Yeah!) classes, a renewable license. Yeah, yeah but not a psychological test. I think it doesn’t have to be so extensive, what you’re saying but it’s sad how someone can come in to a gun show and have a lot of money buy whatever they want show a little maybe a little card or something and get like maybe 20 guns and no one’s asking you just because you have money a simple background check can just Do a lot for people. But i also think that a lot of people like because they don’t want have the conversation about gun violence. They switch over and say like oh it’s mental illness and like that needs to be talked about too but gun violence is a separate issue that also like really needs to be talked about if my life was in danger i would kill. Oh hell yeah. Can I walk faster? no, i really don’t i think I would have like have it in me. i don’t know if i would have it in me. Anyone you would. Nobody has it In them until the moment comes. Like literally fear doesn’t even become a thing anymore. like it disappears and it’s like fight or flight yeah like and you either freeze and die or you make it. and at the end of the day, i’m gonna make it. some people don’t got it in them you can always just you know, Shoot them in a place where they won’t be able to move yeah yeah! That’s what some people think but but when i went to-. I did my (?) class. They said if you’re trying to shoot him in the leg, you have enough time to get away. Or to realize you’re not in danger Or your life isn’t in danger you know. So they said if you’re pulling that gun out, you’re shooting somebody, you’re shooting to kill. I guess i just i don’t understand- I understand, Fighting for your life that’s why i came to this, to the center for sure. But like all this talk about like how to protect ourselves how to be in these situations but it’s like again we’re just Increasing guns and i i keep just one i want to bring us back to like how can we Combat this from the other end i don’t want to carry guns i don’t want to have guns in my club i don’t want to I want to be there to dance i don’t want, to have a firearm on my leg and like but? yeah, but you’re taking the right away at that point. no
But we’ll wait if i can prove to you that there are ways to enact gun reform that will decrease the amount of guns out there Increase education and not hurt the ability of law-abiding citizens to have access to firearms would you be willing to discuss ways to do that yeah like i said i’m all for education But i don’t think like at the end of the day like if someone’s trying to kill me i’m gonna kill them I’m okay so that’s but that but that is you’re allowed to right now you’re allowed to have that gun and so we keeps kind Of saying w hat we’re is already in place this is already possible to have all of these guns. how can we start looking at this and you know, changing our minds and our congress our government you know leaders minds? You guys keep talking about education but that is not a reality. In that it we’re not allowed to instill reform that gives us gun education. So it’s just like layman’s ideas batting around ideas on how to kill how to kill I’m overall against violence at the end of the day. I wouldn’t need or want to have a gun if there wasn’t violence in the world. Sometimes, it’s a right because it’s a necessity, sometimes. So how do we change? How do we do that? Where we start changing the conversation? Where people don’t immediately relate pro gun to- You know that pro gun can equal pro gun reform. Well I mean that’s why we’re here that’s why we’re all here. We’re all risking something by saying something. I always taught that don’t ever like state your opinion on hot topics because you’re just asking for it at that point but I feel like you have to speak up because being silenced is being just as guilty I think the society needs to learn to speak like educated people need to sit down, come together and talk about things. You guys have something to say and we said it and we accept all of each other’s views. I told you we would not leave hating each other. All right everybody that’s a wrap! Hey guys, i’m Amari. 1. This is a great topic to discuss about. I don’t know if this is weird but it will be very interesting if there’s a video of middle ground about motorcycle.

  2. One argument I don't think anyone brought up was the use of illegally obtained firearms. The black market exists and if people are going to break the law by harming others, why wouldn't they just go the extra mile and buy a gun from the dark web?

  3. The big divide in the debate isn't pro violence and anti violence, it is more so what to do about said violence. On one hand, there are those that want to remove the tools that could be used for destruction. On the other, allowing access to these same tools to protect against those with ill intent. As no law in our books will truly change the violent intent of the criminal, I want to have the tools necessary to defend myself from the violent.

  4. Not from the States, but i believe the root cause should be fixed like mental health with equality before taking away your ability to defend yourself. Can you take away the guns from the "bad" people? They turned "bad" because of a broken system in the first place. Fix the system and the guns wont be needed…

  5. Rich white club owner guy, who has never seen adversity, lecturing a disabled minority woman in a wheelchair who was raped about guns……..

  6. I do slightly understand where the pro gun people are coming from, but it’s not a long term solution. You can’t solve gun violence with more guns.

  7. the gun show loophole is false it's not true, and any purchase of a firearm from a federally licensed dealer requires a background check. Just fyi.

  8. Two questions:
1 – Why aren't any of them talking about "Let's come together and find a way to reduce violence." – Instead, these discussions are always aimed at trying to "Come together to find a 'reasonable' way for gun reforms." (most gun crime happens in places that have strict 'gun reforms' in place – more crime happens BECAUSE they have those 'gun reforms' in place.

2 – Why did nobody touch on the PURPOSE of the 2nd Amendment?

  9. And no topic on the real reason Washington added the second admendment. To protect our selves from tyranny. But go ahead give up on the second admendment i hear dictators are nice with their people.
Pretty soon we will have Hillary and the rest of the gang whipping us like that movie from 300 where the slaves carry that 2 ton Royal seat for their generals around….

  10. I would say Pro-guns only because when you make that law your only ripping guns from the honest people and therefore their only protection because this world keeps getting more dangerous.

  11. The gun show loophole is a false narrative. You have nothing but liberals out there no knowledge on the matter. This is why you didnt bring knowledgable folk to the talk. Would shut it down

  12. I'm for licensed hand guns. I am however against civilians owneing AR-15s, or any military grade issued rifles no one. And I am for proper licensing of said hand guns. However I know where the illegal guns are coming from our own government. I've watched crime inc where our own government is selling illegal guns in disenfranchised neighborhoods. I also believe that gun shows should have proper licensing and should only be for 30 and older.

  13. There are other self defense weapons like tasers including ones you can shoot , stun guns, and security systems, why always run to guns as your only defense

  14. i mean if u lose a child or loved one to gun violence im sure ur view would change to anti gun. most of those white congressmen havent lost anybody in a safe space. so they dont care tbh. its only when it happens to u that u change. its a shame really

  15. A car is a privilege. Guns are a right. Most people are not criminals. If you want to hurt people, chances are you will do it regardless of gun laws. Gun laws restrict lawful citizen's ability to defend themselves. Killing and robbing people is already illegal. Clearly if people want to commit a crime, laws won't stop them, obviously.

  16. England bans but they have stabbing problems over there violent is always going be in the world as long as evel people exist and the bad guys can get guns still even with laws.

  17. What?! Lol I bought a gun from a gun show and they did a background check. I accidentally marked the box for committing domestic violence and he said my record didn’t show any. They’re not just going to sell a gun to anyone

  18. Okay so they didn’t even talk about the black market gun trade & illegal guns. No matter if gun laws are stricter or gone out of stores people will find away to get guns illegally. People always find away. Drug addicts in maximum security prisons find a way to get drugs.

  19. How funny, all anti gun people have never had their life in danger, almost like that’s not a coincidence, but of course if thoes situations happened to them they wouldn’t be here

  20. Go watch @Collin Noir, other country’s don’t have gun problems because they never had that right, they have other problems, like in China with knives, the day of the sandy hook shooting 21 kids in China were stabbed by the same guy, and that’s not just a one time thing it’s a constant issue as it is in Europe too, do you think Mexico has gun laws? Damn straight they do. So does Central America

  21. 7:14 and that there is the issue. Why is that a right? I know what the typical answers are. But the other countries have proven, it's not a needed right. And frankly, most people who use the right to have guns don't deserve it.

  22. My mom was a paranoid schizophrenic and came back on more than one occasion with a gun in her possession – legally bought. If you can't better regulate the people who buy guns, get rid of them completely. Anti-gun all the way.

  23. 46% of the defensive gun use incidents are women using their gun to protect themselves.
real feminists support female empowerment. dont kid yourself into thinking you can take some lame women's self defense fighting course and you'll then be able to beat up a man thats trying to hurt you… carry pepper spray, and if that isnt enough for the situation then you have a gun as a last resort.

  24. in most countries you cant even carry PEPPER SPRAY or a pocket knife to defend yourself… let that sink in.
not only do they want to take your freedom to carry a handgun, they want to make it illegal to carry any self defense weapon. cherish and fight for your freedom or one day you will wake up without it… most people are apathetic when it comes to their freedom. they dont realize how valuable that freedom is until its gone. we can look at Hong Kong as a clear example of that. they know they are losing their freedoms by being taken over by China and the majority of the citizens realize it and are fighting to preserve their freedom.

  25. you cant even carry PEPPER SPRAY in most countries… dont give up your freedom to carry a handgun. if criminals dont have guns they will just stab you to death, like in the UK.
yeah maybe they dont have mass shootings, but being stabbed to death isnt much fun. a citizen cant carry pepper spray or a knife, but a criminal will carry a giant butchers knife if he wants…

  26. I disagree when the woman said that she would refuse to take a psychological test… why would you not impose a test that could prevent school shooters from killing children? Just because YOU aren’t a psycho doesn’t mean that the next person won’t be.

Also I don’t understand why people that don’t live in deprived areas are pro-gun. To keep yourself safe in the home, they could keep a knife which isn’t as deadly and is easy to reach for.

If you’re pro guns and live in decent areas, please explain to me why, because I don’t understand.

  27. You cant legislate evil. There will always be evil people whose goal is to hurt as many people as possible. A "license" isn't going to prevent a psychopath from committing a mass shooting.

I can respect these people and their opinions because they are civil. Love to see conversations like this happening

  28. We are already at a middle ground. The anti-gun contingent are lying about finding one. They want to ban all gun ownership, but can't do it all it once, so they do it one tiny increment at a time and call it "reasonable" or "common sense" or "finding a middle ground". It's all lies. Every time they gain a restriction, they come back a year or two later looking for another restriction. Then another. Then another. Over and again, and it will never stop.

  29. If other countries had the right to bare arms we would not have poeple walking across other countries who do. There for you the poeple will still have the power over there government.

  30. Let's Discuss, The thought is, violence can be committed without a gun, but not everyone is good enough to defense physically or outsmart mentally, how all having guns and no one having guns helps in these situation ?

  31. getting rid of guns is like getting rid of drugs. except with guns when law abiding citizen are unarmed they are easy target.

  32. "We live in a society where gun violence is an everyday reality, so having guns is necessary for protection."
What? Why is it, for some reason, supposedly impossible to change American society in such a way that gun violence and the need for protective firearms is reduced? Australia, the UK and almost all of Europe can do without, so why can't the USA? Is this something that's just really difficult to understand for someone not from the United States?

  33. I'm from the Netherlands, we have some of the stricter gun laws in the world. Concealed and open carry are not a thing here. You're only allowed a firearm if you shoot if for sport. And there are many many rules.

We have a very dense population for our size, and in our major cities gun violence is increasing. Even though our laws are so strict. Because countries around us do not have such laws. It would be relatively easy for me to go abroad and get a gun into the Netherlands.

You'd think with all this I'm anti gun, most of my country is but I'm not. I'm against the government having a monopoly on weaponry.

Yesterday the government used our military against protesters, yes in the free thinking Netherlands this is now a thing. People think it's small, because it's only putting up roadblocks. But it's a start to something worse. I do not trust our government to have our best interests at heart. And i believe criminals will get their gun anyway. Why would i the. Expect law abiding citizens to turn them in?

Also the government wants us to surrender our weapons, and then trust them to protect us instead. But they do not take that responsibility very strongly. They routinely cut police budgets, and prioritize trafic police over solving crimes.

If they're not going to be our shield, then they have no right to take our sword.

  34. A psychological test Would not solve the issue because there are people in the world who know they have a problem so they can tell you what you want to hear.

  35. Did you hear Rick from The Walking Dead say he doesn't want to have to carry a gun everywhere he goes pure laziness don't you think LOL I guess he must be rich and he's used to having everyone else doing things for him

  36. Americans: well I just need a way to protect myself in case I'm in danger of my life.
Europeans: why would you be in danger of your life?

  37. When it's very hard to buy a gun legally, it becomes way harder to buy a gun illegally. Most of the guns sold by and to criminals, were first purchased legally by an honest man.

  38. You need a background check to get a gun… legally at least…
    Even at gun shows… 🤦‍♂️
And getting a renewable license if you want to carry, which you get after taking a class. And you have to be a certain age.
18 for long guns(rifle and shotgun) 21 for handguns.

  39. I had a conversation with my boss just today about how americans are idiots for letting people get guns so easily… I mean here to get a gun you have to be not only crazy rich and dedicated but have to go through years of formalities and psychiatrist to get a gun. I have not once in my 22 years of existence heard of a death by gun other than hunting accident

  40. This may make people mad, but the 2nd Amendment is actually to allow people to be none law abiding Citizens. Second I'm not against guns but where do we draw the line. Should I be able to buy nuclear weapons? If not then I should be able to buy Fighter jets? If not should I be able to buy tanks? If not where is the line. Let's as a country pick the line.

  41. You guys see a woman that was robbed and rapped, and who now is on a wheelchair, and guns are still the problem….
    That's fucked up.

  42. So- I like the questions
1- no, nobody should have to go through the same purchase as a car- cars require registration.
2- the masses aren’t as open minded as these folks.
3- other countries don’t have a 2A- it’s already a part of our culture. And nobody is saying your wrong if you don’t choose to live in that culture. But- same as I respect your stance- I demand respect for mine.

I’m not telling anyone what to believe- I’d appreciate it if people respected me like I respect theirs

  43. Criminals dont follow laws and gun reform. There are many felons who cant have guns that do have guns. Think about that for a second.

  44. Its not guns, its not religion, its not laws. Its the heart. Its forgiveness. Its love. Thats the problem. Were lacking sympathy. Love. Kindness. Change of HEART.

  45. Adaeze is ignorant how purchasing guns work. You cannot just walk up and purchase a gun no matter how much money you have… unless your buying an illegal gun on the street.

  46. They leave out the part where basically every other country who have strict guns laws eg australia or Germany have extremely low crime rates

  47. the whole concept of gun control to reduce gun violence and gun deaths is nothing more than a ploy to take away guns. it sounds nice and is what we all would want in a perfect world but we are very far from perfect and wont get any closer with gun control laws.
laws are like locks, tgey keep honest people honest. by definition criminals do not obey laws. a people who will commit murder will not hesitate to get his hands on an illegal gun or 30 round magazine or any other gun law utopians want to enact. those that for some reason cant grab a knife or bat or tire iron and get it done anyway.
guns are tools, not good or bad. you cannot prevent bad people from getting guns, only cause good people to be less capable of defending against the bad. if literally zero bad guys had ak47s or 30 round magazines then it still would be a bad idea to ban them. i am not safer by making the playing field equal for me and the bad guy. all the emphasis is placed on the relatively small number of bad guys that commit heinous crimes and never on the good people defending and protecting. every effort to stifle the bad acts and actors only does so to the good and honest people. period.
gun control is a safety myth. it is a too easy to lead the weak astray from truth and common sense

  48. Uneducated. The "Gun Show Loophole" does NOT exist. You get background checks as legally required at gun shows. Where you don't get a background is private sales such as family member to family member.
