We the people of New York City, in order to form a more perfect metropolis; establish parks and open space as critical urban infrastructure; ensure parks as a key component of public health and tranquility; provide for the maintenance of these spaces; promote equitable access in all five boroughs; secure and make safe the public realm for ourselves and our posterity; do ordain and establish this public realm bill of rights for New York City. Every New Yorker should have access to a park garden or green space within a five-minute walk of where they live. Every New Yorker should have a chance to voice their opinion on local park infrastructure improvements and maintenance. Every New Yorker should have the physical and mental health benefits that parks and green spaces bring to a community. Every New Yorker should have the benefits that parks and green spaces bring to the city’s environment in the face of extreme weather and climate change. Every New Yorker should have public funding for parks recognizing that parks provide services for neighborhoods just as essential as schools and streets We are New Yorkers for Parks.
