SIGMA Full Frame Camera, L-Mount Alliance and New Lenses – Video Interview

video, photo and more. Yamaki-san, good morning, how are you? -Good morning, I’m fine, thank you. How are you? -I’m always good, you know,
what’s the choice in life? But this is a very interesting show
for Sigma, with a lot of announcements and a lot of announcements
of collaborations. But for me, personally, what was
really interesting is your announcement that you’re going to develop
a new full-frame camera. Where is this coming from? -Yes, actually we started this project
three years ago already. We decided to develop the formula
for a full frame sensor, and then we were investigating to develop
our own full frame mirrorless system. But at some point we realized that having a partnership would be
better for the customers. So, we decided to work with
Leica and Panasonic and we decided to feature the new
formula for full frame sensor in it. -Before talking about this alliance, your current cameras are
only APS-C sensor, am I right? -APS-C and also APS-H. -So this is a whole new story for you. And the sensor is already developed
or is it under development? -It’s under development. -And, of course, we are very curious about
the video specifications of this future camera. Is there anything that you
can tell us about it? -Sorry, at this time I cannot comment
about the specifications of the new sensor. -Okay, so let me try a bit different. Do you think this camera will shoot video? -Sorry, again I can’t comment it. Maybe about the time frame, when
to expect this camera in the market? -This camera will be available
next year, 2019. -When you started to develop the camera,
what type of mount you had in mind? Because obviously this evolved
into something a bit different, with the alliance with Panasonic and Leica. Or was it very clear from the beginning
that that’s the mount that you want? -As I said, at first we were considering to
develop our own mount with a short flange back. Currently we use existing SA mount
lens, which has a long flange back. So, it’s time to change to the short
flange back for the new mount system. But, at some point we changed our plan
and we decided to work together, with Leica and Panasonic. -How did this connection actually started?
because at the end of the day, Leica, Panasonic and you,
everybody’s making cameras, and everybody are making lenses. It’s kind of a competition
but maybe also friendship? -As you know, Leica and Panasonic
have been working together for a long time. Likewise, Sigma has been working with
Panasonic for a long time for regular 4/3 and Micro 4/3 systems. We joined the Micro 4/3
system from the beginning, so we know each other for a long time. And then at some point Panasonic
made a proposal to us, to join this L-mount system. -This of course puts you as a company
under an enormous pressure. I mean, another mount,
another lens system, actually also a new camera,
as you just said. How do you prioritize,
how do you make it? It sounds like you have to juggle
all the time. -You mean there are many new systems? Yes, but for now, we have
our own system, the L-mount system, that’s why we need to work on cameras
and lenses for the L-mount system. Regarding the new system
from Canon and Nikon, we have not looked at the camera yet, so we have great interests
in those systems, but currently we don’t have
any plans for it. Actually, the Nikon D7 was
released today in Japan, so we will look at those cameras
and make a decision. -And the EOS R is -as you said-
not yet at least. -Not yet, yes. One more point about this alliance, because you’re all making lenses
and you’re all making cameras. The development will be done jointly
with Panasonic and Leica when it comes to lenses? Or each company will develop and spend
the money on research by themselves? How does it work? Each company its own products separately. And we do not disclose our own
product roadmap to each other. But we work together to make this L-mount
system very robust and compatible with a wide variety of the products
from the three companies. -Interesting. And of course, you also announced
a range of new lenses. Just a little bit about them, because
it’s a mixture of prime lenses and zoom lenses. In short, what what did you
announced during the show? -We announced a total of
5 lenses at this show. This is the 56 mm 1.4 for the APS-C size
and the M4/3 size sensor camera. F-stop at 1.4, and this lens is better
for Micro 4/3 and sony E-mount. Very compact, lightweight,
but high image quality. These two lenses are from
our Art Line, a 40 mm 1.4 and a 28 mm 1.4. Both of the lenses have a very
high optical performance. Especially the 40 mm will be the new
standard for the high-quality lenses. -Which mount does this lens have? -These two lenses are available
in Sigma SA-mount, Canon EF mount, Nikon F-mount and Sony E-mount. -Okay, and then we come
to the two big zooms. -Yes, these two zoom lenses
are from our Sport line, one is a 60 to 600, and
the other one is a 70 to 200. Both two lenses are designed for
professionals or photo enthusiasts. This lens is a 10x zoom lens,
but the optical quality is not poor. Actually it’s superb, because
it’s designed for the professionals, and it covers a really wide range
of the focal length. And the 70 to 200 is designed for
the photo enthusiasts and professionals. In order to achieve this goal we used
9 FLD glass and one SLD glass. FLD is an optical glass, but it has almost exactly the same
characteristics as a flow-light. So we could minimize the longitudinal
chromatic aberration, and bilateral chromatic aberration. -And those lenses will come
in which mount? These lenses are available in
Sigma SA mount, Nikon f-mount and Canon EF mount. -When you come to design new lenses,
especially the line that we see here, Is that part of your vision, or the demand
comes from the customers? -Actually, I say both. Because we have lots of inquiries
and requests from the customers and then we think about it and then
we choose which lens to develop. So, the answer is both. -Yamaki-san, as always

  1. Thanks for this interview, I'm always pleased to hear from Yamakisan <3

    I'm greatly looking forward to the LSD Foveon Pro (or LSD Quattro, LSD Aizu?). And very thankful for the opportunity to cross-mount my SA-lenses (and M-lenses) between a Foveon camera and a mosaic-camera like the Lumix S1.

    Video is unnecessary for Foveon cameras when the reliable and compatible Panasonic has an L-mount series as well. I'd prefer Sigma not too dilute their resources by "re-inventing the wheel" with video for a system which already has the premier photographic stills image quality in terms of tonal fidelity.

    I've an off-the-cuff idea that's been on my mind lately: if Sigma made a 4:5 ratio Foveon sensor they could emphasise its particular suitability for printing (in their marketing narrative). Directing expectations for Foveon is, I think, especially important; clarifying that they are "precision cameras" or "technical cameras".

    It was a beautiful surprise to see this Alliance debut. I've considered Sigma and Fuji to be "the new Leica" in one way or another for a while, so seeing Sigma and Leica unite is very promising, and will hopefully renew Leica, too. And Panasonic brings ballast to these two visionary elements. The Alliance brings diversity, versatility and longevity to all three, and is a great service to the recording and storytelling communities.

  2. I wish you asked him if they will release an ultra wide f/1.8 zoom lens for APS-C to complete the APS-C "holy Trinity" set.
    And also if they have any plans to make the APS-C f/1.4 C prime lenses for Fujifilm X-Mount.

  3. As far as I known Foveon digital image sensors are incredible with native ISO. Not very good with high ISO and don't offer video.

  4. Foveon do not needs a good ISP. It needs exceptionally cutting-edge. if SIGMA wants to capture video from its camera internally, it would be very tough to develop successfully. it's just my personal guess but it may not be available on CSC form factor, when considering 3CMOS is using only on some professional , smaller sensor camcorders.

  5. Eagerly awaiting a full-frame* Foveon which can adapt SA- and M-lenses. Personally, I'd be happy with another non-video**, pure photography Foveon camera. And a built-in grip like the GFX 100S/D5/1D etc makes sense for the full-frame Foveon – especially given the size of the ART lenses and the thermal implications of the larger sensor and larger data-throughput.

    The sd Quattro chassis is almost ideal as is – even allowing me to shoot left-eyed due to the deep EVF (which I can't do with any other camera.)

    A smaller APS-C/H camera could allow for the FF version to have more expensive functional features like the dual XQD+SD arrangement of the Lumix S series (to address throughput.) I think it'd make sense to have a high-end, large, functional, pure-photography full-frame Foveon, and both an identical high-end APS-C (i.e. equiv to Nikon's D500) and a smaller, budget APS-C (perhaps a re-housed sd Quattro).

    The Alliance liberates Sigma from having to dilute resources with unnecessary excursions into video etc.

    * I'd like Full-frame for the full FOV etc, but I'm happy with the current APS-C resolution – personally preferring "deeper pixels" (although I'd naturally also be excited by a high resolution version with the same pixel-pitch as the Quattro, I'd still slightly prefer the deeper pixels.)
    ** at some stage I'd be getting a Lumix S or Leica SL as well given that I have lenses; so they could cover: video; fancy tricks, high-speed burst etc – affording Sigma the space to focus on the photographic experience.

  7. I wonder if part of the strategy of the alliance is for Sigma to focus on this new mount at the expense of Canon, Nikon and Sony, thus avoiding cannibalizing business away from the alliance.

  8. The Foveon sensor colour rendition is excellent, a bit medium-frame -like. But its noise performance is so abominable that it entirely offsets the advantages of Foveon – so much so that, despite the Sigma colour, settling on a Foveon -sensor camera would be imprudent. However, if the new generation of Sigma's sensors is somehow ends up to have the same low-light performance as the best of the competition, the Foveon will blow everything else current out of the water. Then count Me in as a new customer, depending on the range and implementation of its features and its design.

  9. SIGMA IS MAKING NATIVE L-MOUNT LENSES!! and not for Canon R or Nikon Z. They are both so Dead. L-Mount is taking over… 🙂
