Treaty 2…. The year is 1871 Treaty Two is a meaty one for some it’s hard to swallow A lot of land was ceded, a lot of promises were hollow You’ll find a dark & dirty shameful history in all the dark and dirty shameful deeds you’ll find are going to follow First, the Anishinaabe weren’t savvy to the jargon that lawyers use; lawyers drafted up a treaty with words just lawyers could peruse It was said that they could make use of the land ‘like they had in the past’ But if it didn’t get written in the treaty, “… then, that right’s as good as lost” They were requested to “Surrender” the land- yet pretended that it’s still available to them for hunting and for fishing … until they found it unassailable. “$15/family a year”, was about what Canada would pay “A pretty hot deal, by gum” is what the Queen would later say proper for who? Cuz with just 15 dollars a year, how’s a guy to pay the rent, now that these small reserves are the only place to hunt and pitch a tent? The First Nations people of Treaty 2 were accustomed to hunting in much bigger land areas than what they were later confined to: 92,000 sq km was ceded to the Queen…and per person, this dropped to less than one sq km how’s a guy gonna hunt a moose on
less than one square kilometer? Where’s a guy supposed to go to find a buffalo? … matter of fact, where did all those beautiful hairy creatures go? There were 30 million of them across the great plains just a few years ago! Wow, it makes one think: What about a way of life that’s coming apart at the seams? What about that clothing that was promised; now it seems that the promises that the Queen abandoned have left the locals on their knees Can somebody honour these treaties please? (awkward silence…lonely whistling) A First Nations local would be justified in asking, “What about those breeding animals and farming implements?” You promised these things four years ago and they still haven’t been sent Why’d you kick them off of their property on the west side of Clear Lake? “You burnt their houses to the ground before you left them to their fate (reserve 61A on the SW shore of Clear Lake, Mb) “For each reserve a free school”, “the great gift of education” Our forefathers thought it would bring peace and some sort of “righteous assimilation” Some call it genocide, some called it cultural indoctrination. Today we look back in shame with Truth and Reconciliation Children were kidnapped from their parents and crammed into disease-infested accomodations. In some cases up to 50% of them died during their forced incarceration! Yeah, Treaty 2’s a meaty one, for some it’s hard to swallow: A lot of land was ceded, a lot of promises were hollow You’ll find a dark & shameful history in all the dark and dirty shameful words you found were going to follow One can’t help but wonder why more can’t
come to figure that it’s Canada’s Blunders that make these tensions simmer For so long they’ve suffered, yet some have somehow forgiven some of Canada’s blunders
that make these tensions simmer One can’t help but wonder why more can’t
