December 6, 2019

Kia ora. Welcome to this video series
produced by the University of Otago Legal Issues Centre. This series aims to help you navigate the major steps in a civil court dispute. So, what is a civil court dispute? It is any court case that is not a criminal case. It might be a dispute with your ex-partner over relationship property, a dispute with your neighbour over a fence, or a dispute with your ex-business partner
over an agreement. These are all civil court disputes. If you have a dispute with another person that you need help with, these videos will answer some of the questions that you might have along the way. Where can I get advice? How do I file documents in court? What do I do about settlement? What happens when I get to court? What are the court costs about? We will use examples illustrations and animations to provide simple explanations to help guide you and explain what will be expected of you at certain points in the process. So, who are we? We’re the University of Otago Legal Issues Centre. We are a research centre based in the Faculty of Law at the University of Otago. We don’t give legal advice. We research how we can make the civil legal system more affordable, accessible, and efficient. These videos are not legal advice, but are
information about process. Our research has shown that information about process can be hard to access and that’s why we’ve developed this video series.
