Victoria’s Constitution

October 21, 2019

BRIAN COSTAR: A constitution essentially is
the basic law of a jurisdiction, in this case Victoria. We have written constitutions as
do most other countries, Britain and New Zealand are the odd ones out here that don’t. It’s
a consolidated document. It was originally of course a statute of the British parliament,
it is now a statute of the Victorian Parliament and it if you like, is the rule book. It contains
all the important things about parliament and judiciaries and all the component parts
thereof. So I think the phrase “basic law” tells you what it’s all about, it’s the
basics.
